Joe Chavez’s Biggest Little Story

In September of 2012, at the cast party for Nevada Opera’s presentation of Sweeney Todd, I happened to run into the General and Artistic Director, Monica Harte. Our conversation turned into music and technology, the former is for me a pleasure the latter is a passion I’ve turned into a very successful career. When Monica asked I would join the board of directors I jumped at the chance. Little did I know that I would be helping to shape the future of a company that has existed since 1967 in Northern Nevada. An even bigger challenge is trying to make Opera as an entertainment experience current for a generation raised on MP3s and vocal “auto tuning” and at a time when Opera companies are closing due to economic pressures. Nevada Opera has found fiscal path that reduces the cost of presenting the art form without sacrificing the quality of the production. I’m happy that I am able to contribute to this revival of the opera company here and Reno and to also help sustain the art form on the global stage as well.

Less is more as the saying goes, or should I say Big Voices, Little Opera company.
